The art of organizing toys after Christmas: how to teach your kids to become little organizers
In this article we are going to focus on how to get children more involved in a fun way, using games and prizes for creating a habit. The intention is getting creative and learning organizing skills with your family for some harmony and regaining space at home, after your Holidays celebrations.
Ready? Let’s go!
Strategic plan:
Turning each task in a “treasure game”.
Creating a sorting system: favorite toys, items for sale and donations, etc.
Practical tips for labeling boxes or using tagged classifiers.
Turning each task in a “treasure game”
Invite your kids to pick up some tote bags or recyclable boxes and line them up on the floor of their bedrooms and play area. Then make a pile or two of toys with their help.
Create some game rules together to spot, select and sort those toys that are broken or not that interesting for them anymore. Those ones they will be willing to give away to other family because they have not played with it for more than a year.
Maybe it could be a race or a guess game between siblings with an ice cream or pizza party as a reward? Give them the freedom to make their choices but request them to at least pick two or three toys that HAVE to go, the more the better of course.
Encourage them to focus on solutions instead of resisting giving some of their toys away, and let them be aware it also gives them more space for new gifts.
This not only will show them some respect but will support them with the practice of decision making and will cultivate a spirit of generosity in them.
You can either post them on your different community social media pages of your trust or take them to charity shops, other women/mamas clothes swaps and thrift stores.
Practical tips for labeling boxes and using space saving containers
There is a way without necessarily using labels and it is using different type of material or shape containers, like: a hammock organizer for stuffed animals, balls and other lightweight toys. It can go hanging on the wall or over the door. Then use a bench/ storage for bigger toys and medium boxes for under bed storage and drawers to sort cars, figures and smaller toys.
As an alternative, get a toy storage furniture for kids rooms that can be colorful with plenty of space and easy mobility. Then, think about something apart for Lego sets as well. I additionally suggest using unconventional type of storage you find at home, those random spots that don’t seem like a toy storage but they could be.
Another system for labeling boxes is using visual tags with representative images of the most common toys in a variety of colors or shapes. It helps with the younger kids that don’t know how to read yet. Take your time and willingness for doing it at your pace and honest capacity.
To finish with this new content about the art of organizing toys with kids after Christmas, I recommend to have relatives and friends rules for gifting toys to your kids, inviting them to get functional presents and also clothes as well.
