Kitchen declutter Guideline: Know what to keep and What to Toss

Are you overwhelmed by your cluttered kitchen?

If you’re ready to simplify and create a kitchen you love, this guide will teach you how to declutter your kitchen in an easy and approachable way.

Start by removing everything from the counters. Clean and keep anything you use daily, and put away everything that doesn’t belong in the kitchen. Examples are random paperwork, mail, keys, toys, etc.

Declutter your kitchen by category.

Go through your cabinets, drawers, pantry, fridge, and other storage spaces one by one and category by category.

Examples of those general categories might be:

  • Small appliances

  • Water bottles

  • Food storage containers

  • Cooking tools & utensils

  • Mixing bowls & measuring cups

  • Cups, glasses & coffee mugs

  • Plates & bowls

  • Pots & pans

  • Bakeware (baking sheets, pans, etc.)

  • Cutlery & cutting boards.

Keep the items that you use frequently or regularly in your counters, cabinets, and other spaces, and use organizers such as shelf risers, baskets, or jars to maximize space and visibility.

Pare down pots and pans to those three or four sizes you use weekly.

Winnow down bakeware to what you’ve used in the past year.

What to Toss:

  • Knives that are bent or can’t be sharpened.

  • Food storage containers that have no matching lid.

  • Plastic ware, especially those used in takeout containers.

  • Any utensils or gadgets you haven’t used in the last year.

  • Any dishware that you haven’t used in the past year or that is chipped or cracked.

  • Any mismatched items, like mugs.

  • Holiday plates or china that you never use during the holidays.

  • Table linens that are stained or that you don’t like or never use.

  • Torn towels, dishcloths, or oven mitts.

Toss, donate, or relocate anything you don’t use, need, or love, such as takeout items, duplicates, expired foods, or unwanted gifts.

Trust yourself that you will get what you need when you need it. Don’t hold onto things out of guilt or obligation. If someone gave you a gift that you never liked or used, let it go.

I hope this guideline helps you declutter your kitchen and create a space you love. Happy decluttering!
