Creative ideas for small bedrooms

Living in small spaces does not have to be uncomfortable or messy if we learn how to organize, storage and decorate them properly accordingly to its dimensions and potential. Getting creative while adequating different areas of the room can actually turn into a very fun process. With these ideas I am looking to inspire your organizational skills and stimulate your creativity to take advantage of your small room with the right furniture, storage solutions and even the amount of light it gets.

Multi-Function Furniture

When choosing furniture for a small bedroom think about those that can be used for more than one purpose. I love this idea of placing a nice work desk that also serves as bedside table with a cute small lamp. If you are worry about a bulky desk chair hitting your toes and knees, a stool that can easily tuck beneath the desk is your way to go. Another great option I consider you can play with is opting for a comfy shoes bench with plenty of inside storage for pillows and bedding sets. You can attach it to the bottom of the bed with a full size mirror at the front, so you will get a dressing area as well. Voilà.

Smaller Furniture

Scale down your options for dresser, nightstands and desk BUT the bed. That one can be as big or small you prefer since I am a big supporter of having the size of bed that better fits your resting needs. However, choosing smaller furniture, even though they are multifunctional or double duty, is the best suggestion for a decluttered appearance which is so important in small spaces. Lower furniture and beds, lighter built in materials and fewer elements can be some references before getting your bedroom set.

Multiple Types of Storage

There are some visual tricks you can consider to make a small room look larger. Mount cubbies on the wall for books, plants or pictures, decorative boxes for jewelry and small belongings, different-sized storage cubes for laundry and bedding sets or toys, open-faced baskets for blankets, and under-bed storage like wheeled drawers for seasonal clothing and bags. You will clear the floors and harmonize the room besides providing plenty of storage options for daily and non daily-use items that you can easily move or slide, while adding decorative shapes and elements to your bedroom in a simpler way.

Closet Trick

Customizing your storage solutions would be the most efficient way to upgrade the functionality of small rooms closet. Declutter it with the rule of giving away and offering for sale all the items that have not been used for more than one to two years. Use a mix of cubes, drawers, shelves, boxes, hanging bars and shoe racks to create an organized, aesthetic and easy to maintain closet. You probably won’t need all these options together, analyze the space first and select the ones that better suit your closet size and decoration style. Place hanging and folded clothing by colors and textures. As a last option, label containers according to its use for easier sorting.

Light fabrics

Microfiber bedding, linen or polyester curtains and light texture chairs are normally ideal for reduced spaces. They offer a refreshing look and feel and give the room a wider sensation. For colder seasons, feel free to add flurry pillows, thicker blankets and warmer bedspreads. Bedding sets can be the exception most of the time, but for the rest of decorative and functional elements think about lighter colors and less heavy fabrics.

Thoughtful use of natural and artificial light

Pay attention to the amount of natural light coming from your windows and never block it with furniture or big objects. Closer to the window, place furniture that would benefit from natural light like work desks, mirrors and reading chairs. Consider installing floor to ceiling windows with thin frames to visually amplify the space and expand the clarity of your room. Artificial light is also important, instead of just counting on ceiling lights choose other options such as energy efficient lamps, curtain lights and battery candles for a cozier environment.

Landscaping wall arts

With this last but not less important idea, I want you to focus on wall decoration. For small rooms, I like to suggest big single horizontal pictures or paintings with landscaping images like waterfalls, beach or city views, forests, sunsets or light color mixed techniques. It will open an artistic window to your room and make it look wider and prettier.

I am excited to think these creative ideas will be helpful for you to setting up your small bedroom like a pro. I highly recommend to start with the easiest step first and then: enjoy the process!
