Small but mighty: create your home office in a small space
Working from home is now more popular than ever, either in mixed positions where you get to work in a facility some days and have the option to work at your house one or two days a week. Or full virtual roles where the need of having a nice work space at home is even greater.
But if you are an entrepreneur and business owner, running a brand or leading a work crew, of course you need to create an office at home. In this post I am going to support you with this purpose, specially if you are already thinking you don’t have enough space for this but you really need to figure it out.
Let’s start with this small but mighty home office creation!
Choose the right furniture and equipment
Think about comfort, practicality and minimalism. Your desk and work chair are going to be a long term space and comfortable furniture can make a tremendous difference in your decision making, creativity and efficiency. So I would say this is the first step and please let me help you with some tips:
Invest in an ergonomic and comfortable chair:
This is definitively the core of your home office and sometimes it is not an easy task since the prices may vary from less than one hundred dollars to more than one thousand dollars.
So instead of focusing on prices better paying attention to back, thigh and arms support, and check on warranty offered besides the quality of the material it is made of. Also try the flow of the wheels and keep in mind the type of floor where your office will be.
If there is carpet, you will need an acrylic mat for being able to easily move on your chair. I am not a fan of this mats so hopefully you won’t need it. Make sure the height is also adjustable or get a step for resting your feet if you prefer a smaller or more simple one.
A functional desk:
With good drawers or storage made of firm material but easy to move. I don’t recommend a heavy desk. Much better if it is small and has the perfect height for you and your chair. For more limited spaces, a table attached to the wall that you can fold-unfold when not in use is a great idea. And then you can also add some upper shelves for books, journals, or square baskets for chargers and other office materials.
According to the chair and desk you got, follow ergonomic rules to reduce the impact on your body from sitting for long time, and set up your workspace in such a way that your back and neck are straight and your arms are parallel to the floor. Research online about where to place your monitor, keyboard, chair and desk based on your height.
Set your home office by natural lighting:
Setting up your home office in a space with natural daylight is a wonderful way to help you feel more energized and inspired. Natural lighting is helpful for boosting your health and supporting your overall well-being thanks to the maintenance of Vitamin D levels which improves your sleep patterns and keep you in a good mood.
With that being said about the health benefits, placing your home office by natural lighting source will help you lower your energy bill because you won’t need to use artificial lighting that often.
If you don’t count on enough natural light or used to work at night times, try placing a quality desk lamp and a few cheap rope LED lights around the edges of your desk. It will bath your home office with soft lighting.
Pick the right colors and add a personal touch.
Colors do have a great psychological impact on us. Choosing the right color can make a difference between positive and energized motivation or feeling down and sleepy while you sit at your work desk. Different colors evoke different physical and emotional feedback: light and earthy tones or energy inducing colors are the most suggested for a home office. Avoid darker ones.
Adding your personal touch will make you fall in love with your workplace and feel more inspired and comfortable. It could be some plants or design items that are inviting and can get you in the right mood for work and to overcome some of the challenges of working from home.
Conclusion
Set clear expectations first before you start designing your home office or hiring a professional to do it for you. Make a list of everything you need based on the type of work you do and keep it simple. Make sure all the furniture, equipment and decoration you get has the right dimensions and characteristics for your small space.
I know working from home has became the norm for many people and it can be very tricky, but a well-set office will make it easier and supportive. Get yourself a cute workspace where you can focus and be motivated, without worrying about how small it is.
