5 Garage Organization Mistakes to Avoid

If you are like many busy families, you probably use your garage as a storage space for everything from bikes and sports equipment to tools and holiday decorations. But having a cluttered garage can make it hard to find what you need, waste valuable space, and even pose safety hazards. As a professional organizer, I have seen many common mistakes that people make when trying to organize their garages. Here are five of them:

Mistake #1: Not having a plan. Before organizing your garage, you should know what you want to store, where you want to keep it, and how you want to access it. A plan can help you avoid wasting space, time, and money.

Mistake #2: The second mistake is not emptying the garage. There are a few reasons you want to do that. You can start with a blank slate that will allow you to create zones with functional storage solutions that will be sustainable for your family's needs. Doing this is a game changer, but you must give yourself enough time.

Mistake # 3: Another common mistake is storing things in the garage that don’t belong there. You should only keep items suitable for the garage environment, such as tools, outdoor equipment, and seasonal items. Avoid storing things that can be damaged by heat, cold, moisture, or pests, such as food, clothing, photographs, paper, memorabilia, and electronics

Mistake # 4: The fourth mistake is not using the vertical space in your garage. You can maximize your storage space by installing shelves, hooks, racks, or pegboards on the walls and ceiling of your garage. This can help you free up floor space and make your items more visible and accessible.

Mistake # 5: A fifth mistake is buying bins or other storage pieces before you sort and purge your items. You should first declutter your garage and get rid of anything that you don’t need, use, or love. Then, you can measure your space and buy the appropriate storage containers that fit your needs and budget. Don’t forget to label it! Label your bins or containers with what is inside each bin or container so you can easily find what you need and put it back where it belongs.

Boxed and Label
